TENER


Tener normally means "to have" to indicate possession 
but it's also used in different idiomatic expressions.

  • To express age
¿Cuántos años tienes?
Tengo 18 años.

¿Cuántos años tiene usted?
Tengo 67 años.

How old are you? (informal)
I'm 18 years old.


How old are you? (formal)
I'm 67 years old.
  • To express sensations
tener calor - to be hot
tener frío - to be cold
tener hambre - to be hungry
tener sed - to be thirsty
tener suerte - to be lucky
tener miedo - to be afraid
tener cuidado - to be careful
tener éxito - to be successful
tener prisa - to be in a hurry
tener razón - to be right


¡Tengo calor, necesito agua! - I'm hot, I need water! 
Si tienes frío ponte una chaqueta. - If you are cold,  put on a jacket.
Los niños tienen hambre. - The children are hungry.
Tengo mucha sed - I'm very thirsty.
No tengo suerte con la lotería - I'm not lucky with the lottery.
¿Tienes miedo? Es una película. - Are you afraid? It's just a movie.
¡Ten cuidado con ese cuchillo! - Be careful with that knife!
Juan tiene éxito en los negocios - Juan is successful in business.
¿Por qué tienes prisa? - Why are you in a hurry?
¡Tienes razón, como siempre! - You are right, as always!
 
  • "Feel like" doing something: tener ganas de + infinitive 
Tengo ganas de ir al cine.
Tenemos ganas de comer una paella.
¿Tenéis ganas de bailar?
I feel like going to the cinema.
We feel like eating paella.
Do you (plural) feel like dancing?

TENER QUE


  • To express obligation
Tengo que hablar español.
Tienes que descansar.
Juan tiene que ir al médico.
Tenemos que llamar al profesor.
Tenéis que visitar España.
Los niños tienen que dormir temprano.
I have to speak Spanish.
You have to rest.
Juan has to go to the doctor.
We have to call the teacher.
You (plural) have to visit Spain.
Children have to sleep early.
