Difference between HACE, DESDE HACE and DESDE


hace - ago, for
hace is used to indicate the length of time an action has been performed. 

Hace siete años que vivo en California.
I have been living in California for seven years.

Me mudé a California hace siete años.
I moved to California seven years ago.

desde - since
desde is used when we are talking about an specific point in time or date.
Estoy en Texas desde el viernes pasado. 
I have been in Texas since last Friday. 

Estoy en Texas desde el 10 de agosto. 
I have been in Texas since August 10th. 


No he visto a Elsa desde el sábado por la noche. 
I haven't seen Elsa since Saturday night. 

Mi familia vive en Galicia desde 1981.
My family has lived in Galicia since 1981. 

desde hace - for 
desde hace is used when we are talking about a period of time, an interval, a duration.

Estoy en California desde hace siete años.
I have been in California for seven years. 


Gwen estudia español conmigo desde hace cinco años.
Gwen has studied Spanish with me for five years. 


Conozco a mi amiga Lucía desde hace siete años.
I have known my friend Lucía for seven years.
