Reflexive vs. Non reflexive Verbs

Some verbs can change their meaning in Reflexive Form. Below you will find the most commun ones:

ABONAR - to pay money
Abona la cuenta, por favor.
Pay the bill, please.

ABURRIR - to bore
Las noticias aburren al niño.
The news bores the child.

ACORDAR - to agree

Acordamos ir al cine juntos.
We agreed to go to the cinema together.

CAER - to fall, collapse

El árbol cayó en la carretera.
The tree collapsed on the street.

CAMBIAR - to change
Quiero cambiar euros por dólares.
I want to change euros for dollars.

CONDUCIR - to drive
En UK conducen a la izquierda.
In the UK they drive on the left.

CORTAR - to cut
Corta la hierba, por favor.
Cut the grass, please

DESPEDIR - to dismiss, fire

Mi jefe despidió a dos empleados.
My boss fired two employees.

DIRIGIR - to lead, run, direct

Pedro dirige la empresa de su padre.
Peter runs his father's company.

DORMIR - to sleep

Normalmente duermo ocho horas.
I usually sleep eight hours.

ENCONTRAR - to find

No encontré las llaves.
I didn't find the keys.

HACER - to do, make
Esta tarde haré un pastel.
I will make a cake this afternoon.

IR - to go

Fui a Barcelona este verano.
I went to Barcelona this summer.

LLAMAR - to call
Llama por teléfono a tus padres.
Call your parents.

LLEVAR - to carry, take

Lleva el diccionario a clase.
Take the dictionary to class.

METER - to put

Mete los yogures en la nevera.
Put the yoghurt on the fridge.

MUDAR - to change

La serpientes mudan de piel.
The snakes shed their skin.

NEGAR - to deny

No puedes negar que es una injusticia.
You can't deny that is an injustice.

PARECER - to seem

Él parece contento hoy.
He seems happy today.

PEGAR - to hit, to stick
Pega las pegatinas en la pared.
Paste the stickers on the wall.

PONER - to put
Pon la chaqueta en el armario.
Put the jacket in the closet.

PROBAR - to taste, try

Prueba la tarta.
Try the cake.

QUEDAR - to arrange to meet

Quedamos a las 10 de la mañana.
We meet at 10 pm.

QUERER - to want

Quiero ir de vacaciones a Hawai.
I want to go on vacation to Hawaii.

QUITAR - to take away
Por favor, quita los platos del escurridor.
Please take away the dishes from the dish rack .

SENTAR - to place
Darwin sentó las bases de la teoría de la evolución.
Darwin laid the foundations of the theory of evolution.


VOLVER - to return
Volveré a casa a las diez de la noche.
I'll be home at ten in the evening.
ABONARSE - to subscribe to 
Me he abonado a National Geographic.
I subscribed to National Geographic.

ABURRIRSE - to get bored
Me aburro si no trabajo.
I get bored if I don't work.

ACORDARSE - to remember

No me acuerdo.
I don't remember.

CAERSE - to fall down

Pedro se cayó por las escaleras.
Pedro fell down the stairs.

CAMBIARSE - to change (clothes)Los actores se están cambiando en el camerino.
The actors are changing in the dressing room.

CONDUCIRSE - to behave
Los estudiantes se condujeron perfectamente.
The students behaved perfectly.

CORTARSE - to cut oneself
Me corté el flequillo.
I cut my bangs.

DESPEDIRSE - to say goodbye

Mi jefe se despidió de los empleados.
My boss said goodbye to the employees.

DIRIGIRSE - to walk to, to go, to write do

El policía dirige el tráfico.
The policeman directs the traffic.

DORMIRSE - to fall asleep

El bebé se durmió enseguida.
The baby fell asleep right away.

ENCONTRARSE - to meet

Nos encontramos a las diez en el cine.
We met at the cinema at ten.

HACERSE - to become
Se hizo enfermera.
She became a nurse.

IRSE - to go away from, leave

Me fui de la oficina a las 5 de la tarde.
I left the office at 5 pm.

LLAMARSE - to be called
Mi hermana se llama Neli.
My sister's name is Neli.

LLEVARSE - to carry away

Helena y yo nos llevamos muy bien.
Helena and I carry on very well.

METERSE - to go into, go in, go inside

Se metió en la cueva y se perdió.
He went into the cave and got lost.

MUDARSE - to move

Nos mudamos en abril.
We moved in April.

NEGARSE - to refuse

Me niego a firmar estos papeles.
I refuse to sign these papers.

PARECERSE - to resemble, to look alike

Te pareces mucho a tu padres.
You look a lot like your father.

PEGARSE - to stick, burn, to get burned
La comida se pegó a la sartén.
The food stuck to the pan.

PONERSE - to put on
Ponte la chaqueta.
Put the jacket on.

PROBARSE - to try on

Prueba esta chaqueta.
Try this jacket on.

QUEDARSE - to stay, remain

Me quedaré en casa este fin de semana.
I will stay home this weekend.

QUERERSE - to love each other

Nos queremos mucho.
We love each other a lot.

QUITARSE - to take off, get out
Quítate de en medio.
Get out of my way.

SENTARSE - to sit down
Siéntate en el sofá.
Sit down on the sofa.

VOLVERSE - to turn around
¡Vuélvete!
Turn around!
